ARTIST'S STATEMENT
My roots and purpose as an artist...

"I was born in Delices, a village on the South-Eastern coast of Dominica in the Caribbean. There, West African and European cultures blended into a beautiful mixture of music, costumes, dance, and color during festivities such as the pre-Lenten Masquerade (Carnival, or Mardi Gras).

People danced the belaire, mazouk, and quadrille to the accompaniment of drums and jing ping bands. Even today, village chantwels (female lead singers and composers) create songs about social and political issues, as well as the latest village gossip.

On full moon nights, young and old gathered to sing, dance, tell stories, and play music and ring games. In every home, grandparents recounted to children stories of the mythical and folk characters like Soucouyan and Lougarou, who still--it is said--inhabit the countryside. Cultural activity was an integral part of daily life. Production of staple crops like cassava (manioc, or yuca) excluded wage labor through a system called koudmen (from the French coup de main), though which villagers traded skills and work hours. At harvest time, women scraped the cassava roots while men ground them and dried the mash over the fire in huge, shallow iron pots.

As we worked, everyone sang to the music of drums and the ti bwa, a length of heavy bamboo placed on a stand and played by several percussionists, each with two sticks. Work songs also echoed across the village to accompany the arduous hauling of logs from the nearby mountains to the coast for building dugout canoes and houses. Those rhythms and melodies, and that spirit of community work, shaped my development as a person and an artist.

As a performer, popular theater teacher, and community worker, it is my mission, therefore, to help restore the arts to their role in the continuing renewal of community. I strive to do this through performance pieces blending traditional with contemporary cultural forms, and also through popular theater, which fosters a process of collective reflection, creation, and action. In this way, I hope to contribute to overcoming the problems that afflict our society, and to preserving the links between art and daily life."

Greetings Ras Mo:

Such a wonderful video highlighting this historic event, please supply us with more extracts.

This, flag raising ceremony and traditional cultural show will go a long way in keeping the country and people of Dominica in the minds of our North American brothers and sisters, as well as keeping generations of homeland Dominicans inspirited and uplifted .

You are such a hard worker, and it is portrayed so beautifully throughout all your work. You are a fine enthusiast in so many aspects of the cultural arts and we are all privileged to partake in you multi-level performance of drumming, dancing as well as your spoken word poetry.

Hi Ras Mo,

Your page looks nice. I love that dread picture as well. Always amazed to find out so much. To share in one of Albert's Chronicle articles, A Brief History of Theatre in Dominica,
by Albert Williams (The Chronicle - Sept 12/2003)

" ...Organizations like the Movement of Cultural Awareness (MCA), established by Delamance 'Ras Mo' Moses, Clement Richards, and Sobers Esprit pioneered a new form of theatre using the arts as a form for social change. They experimented with an art form they called 'performance poetry' that utilized drama and music, particularly drumming. Ras Mo travelled the island and the region to showcase the art form. Today, Ras Mo lives in the United States where he continues to be a cultural enthusiast..."

being born in the USA and know the different attitudes my question is, since then 2003 to now 2008, in your opinion what is the overal attitude in the USA compared to in Dominica to performance Poetry? This would be a great group to get started here , what do you think?

Sincerely,

Tempie

THIS A DREAD PHOTO

GREAT CONCEPT

ABSOLUTLY IRE

THE LINES OF PERSPECTIVE DRAG THE BEHOLDERS EYE RIGHT TO YOU AT THE HEART OF THE PHOTO, YOUR HANDS IN THE MEDITATIVE POSTURE TAUGHT TO US BY HIS IMPERIAL MAGESTY.

THE COCOA-BROWN COLOR SCHEME RANGING FROM DEEP BROWN TO SHADES OF LIGHTER BROWN CREAM AND WHITE, AGAIN, DO JUSTICE TO THE SUBJECT.

NO CAPTION IS MADE AVAILBLE WITH THIS AWARDABLE SHOT, BUT TO ME IT LOOKS AS IF IT IS THE BOTTM VIEW F A TREE UPROOTED DURING A WINDSTORM.

AS YOU KNOW, WE HAVE EXPERIENCED MANY A WINDSTORM AND HURRICANE, AND I KNOW A TREE ROOT WHEN I SEE ONE.

ALL IN ALL, KUDOS FOR SHARING THIS WONDERFUL PICTURE WITH US.

TRUELY YOU ARE THE STEM, AND YOUR THRONE IS THE ROOTS.
